Why I work with a Second Shooter
I have a confession to make. I didn't take every single image that you've seen on this blog this year.
Lucas took a significant number of them.
This morning, I was trying to think back to when and why Lucas started helping me with weddings, and I honestly can't remember the reason or how it all came about... it just seems like he always has. I've only photographed three weddings in the history of my career without him, and he's been absolutely invaluable to me. I don't talk a lot about his role in the business, but without him, I wouldn't be able to do what I do. He's involved in the entire process: when he can, he'll come to initial consolations with me to meet our couples and to engagement sessions to carry equipment and set up lights. He's there for me as I sit at my computer, editing and working on behind-the-scenes projects, and he's my driver and road trip buddy for destination weddings. But he's always been the biggest help ON the wedding day. Since I'm just one person, I can't be everywhere that I need to be, getting both the candid images and the formal portraits that I need in order to tell a complete, well-rounded story. So Lucas gets to go all of the places I can't and take the images I just don't have time for. Most of the time, this means he'll photograph the guys getting ready, the majority of the details, and candid images while I do formal portraits. Since he knows me so well and we've worked together quite a bit, he's able to match my style well enough that our photographs look very similar and flow together perfectly.
Over the past year, I've been incredibly proud of how quickly he's grown and improved as a photographer. On several occasions, I've opened up his photographs after the wedding and been blown away by the images he captured... things that I didn't even know happened, but end up being incredibly special.
So, today I thought I would share some of my favorite moments that Lucas has captured over the last year. As you scroll through them, I hope that you're able to see the value in working with a good second shooter, and why Lucas is such an important part of my business.
