Las Vegas Thirst Relief Benefit Shoot
Nearly 1 billion people in the world today still lack access to clean drinking water.More than 2 billion people lack adequate sanitation systems. Additionally, almost 1 million children die each year due to preventable water-related illnesses.
Honestly, my mind can't wrap itself around these statistics. As Americans, we live in a place where most of us haven't had to think twice about not having access to clean water. For most of us, we simply walk 20 steps to the nearest faucet, turn it on, and drink. We have the luxury of long hot showers and flushing toilets, but the reality is much of the world has never known these things.
We are so incredibly blessed monetarily in our country, and it's really important for me to remember that. If the Lord has given me more than I need, I know that the reason he has done so is to be able to use my excess to help others. So when I saw that Thirst Relief was sponsoring a benefit shoot during WPPI, it was kind of a no-brainer to sign up. Not only were we able to help support an organization working to end the water problem and foster long-term community development, but we were able to spend an afternoon learning from several industry leaders and meeting wonderful new friends.
If you're thinking about going next year, I'd highly recommend it. It's a great way to build your portfolio, but more importantly than that, the friendships you'll make with like-minded people within your industry are invaluable and the organization you'll support is incredible.
I spent most of my time during the shoots observing and talking with others instead of making photographs (which, if you know me, is a bit strange :), but the following are a few of my favorites from our time together.
